Windows 2000: pros, cons and myths about it
Windows 2000 is a fairly outdated operating system, which, nevertheless, can still be found in some companies or among private users who love rare hardware. But no matter how many operating systems have changed since then, Windows 2000 was useful and convenient for everyone in its own way. Therefore, it would not be superfluous to highlight the pros and cons that distinguish Windows 2000 from other, even more modern, operating systems.
Important: I’ll immediately note that we will talk about the pros and cons of Win2000 in comparison with older versions.
The benefits of Windows 2000
Protect operating and system files. #Windows 2000 is extremely sensitive to system files, so it is extremely difficult to kick them out. Of course, any operating system has this, but Win2000, given the time in which it came out, was really good at protecting system files. She wasn’t invulnerable, but she did her job well.
Excellent task manager. Compared to previous versions, Win2000 has done a really good job on the task manager. A tool with many functions, with which you can visually assess the system load level, remove unwanted processes, etc. In general, Win2000 had a slightly more simplified version of the task manager that was found in more modern systems.
Excellent logging system. Any problem, even the most insignificant one, will immediately be recorded in the operating system logs. From these logs, the user can, if desired, extract a lot of useful information.
Access control. The administrator can do whatever he wants with other users. For example, you can set a quota for free space, prohibit the use of a printer, access to folders, etc.
You can also note a visual plus. Compared to previous systems, Win2000 now has some nice pop-up menu windows, new fonts, a cursor under the mouse, etc.
Negative myths
It is also important to note that Win2000 has developed a number of myths over the course of its existence, some of which are presented here.
On computers of its time, Win2000 was slow. Yes, but only if the computer did not have enough hard drive space, had a weak processor or little memory. For example, on a computer with RAM of 128 megabytes and a processor frequency of 400 MHz, the OS felt great. But not everyone had the financial opportunity to purchase a powerful computer for that time.
Programs from previous systems will not work on Win2K. In fact, out of 10 programs, 6-7 work perfectly.
Win2K is extremely complex. Getting used to it will be quick, especially in the interface, which is in many ways similar to the Win9x/ME interface.
And these are all the main myths about Windows 2000. And, as practice has shown, they really are myths and have not been proven by users.
Disadvantages of Windows 2000
Among all the shortcomings, it is worth highlighting the low maneuverability of the system. This point stood out in particular when working with system files. Also, this version of the OS was difficult to demolish, both due to stupidity and desire. Finally, due to the fact that older and newer software and games did not always work correctly on Win2000, for many it became simply an unnecessary system that took up space.
